Washougal is the closest town to us that isn’t Camas. Most grinders quoting work out here are driving from the far side of the county and pricing the trip into the number. We’re not, because there isn’t one.

The Gorge Decides What Comes Down Here
Most of Clark County loses trees to age, disease, or a homeowner deciding a maple got too big. Washougal loses them to wind.
Blowdown stumps are a different job
A tree that failed in an east wind rarely breaks off clean at the base. It levers, and the root plate lifts — so what you’re left with is a tilted stump with one side of the root mass pulled partway out of the ground and the other still anchored.
That’s not a standard grind. Tell us it was a windthrow when you send the photo, and get the side view — we need to see how far the plate has lifted before we can quote it honestly.
Storm work comes in clusters
After a real east-wind event, half the calls out of Washougal are the same week. We schedule storm stumps as they come rather than batching them, but if you’re calling after a blow, get the photo in early — the queue fills fast and everyone wants the same Saturday.

Above town — the slopes
North and east of downtown the ground climbs fast. Terraced yards, driveways that fall away from the street, and lots where the backyard is meaningfully lower than the front.
This is where a tracked machine stops being a nice-to-have. A wheeled grinder either doesn’t get there or wrecks the lawn getting there. And on a slope we’re grinding to depth below the downhill side, which is a detail cheaper quotes tend to skip and then charge for.
Down by the river — the flats
The lowland properties toward the Columbia are a different animal: flat, easy access, and softer ground that holds water well into the season. Cottonwood shows up down here in a way it doesn’t up the hill.
Cottonwood grinds fast but wide — the root flare on a mature one runs well past what the trunk suggests. Measure the mound, not the tree.
What We Grind in Washougal
Doug fir and big-leaf maple dominate, same as Camas, with a few species you see more of down here:
- Douglas fir — the wind casualty. Straight grain, grinds predictably. The deep taproot means a deep grind costs more here than on a shallow-rooted species.
- Big-leaf maple — root flare can run half again the trunk diameter, which is why maple quotes surprise people. Run the tape across the full mound.
- Cottonwood — river-adjacent properties. Fast-growing, wide-spreading, and usually coming out because it dropped a limb on something.
- Western red cedar — stringy and fibrous rather than brittle. Slower going, throws long chips instead of clean ones.
- Oregon white oak — less common, but the ones out here are old. Dense, slow, and worth flagging in the quote request so we plan the time.

A windstorm took my tree down. What do I actually need?
Two different trades. A tree service to buck the trunk and haul the wood, then us for the stump and root plate. We don’t fell trees or remove downed timber. If the tree is still lying there, call the tree service first — we’ll be quicker and cheaper once the site is clear.
The stump is tilted and part of the root ball is out of the ground. Can you still grind it?
Usually, yes — but it’s a different job than a flat stump and we need to see it properly. Send a side view showing how far the plate has lifted along with the top-down shot. A partially lifted root mass sometimes needs the raised portion cut down before grinding, which we’ll spec in the quote rather than discover on the day.
Do you charge more to come to Washougal than Camas?
No. Same by-the-inch rate across our whole service area, and travel inside it is included. We’re ten minutes away.
My backyard is up a slope with no vehicle access. Is that a problem?
Usually not. The machine is tracked rather than wheeled, which is exactly the difference that matters on grade and on soft ground. Send a side-view photo showing the slope and the route in, and we’ll tell you honestly before we roll out.
What happens to the wood chips?
They stay on site by default — spread and leveled across the depression as mulch rather than left in a pile. If you’d rather have them hauled off, say so in the quote request and we’ll price it.
